TechZone's buying guide is your resource for questions that you may have while making your decision in buying a new computer. We've collected the most commonly asked questions and have answers below.
Should I buy a PC or a Mac?
There are several factors you will want to consider while making this decision. First of all, Illinois State University is a dual-platform campus, meaning we support either system. Some departments, however, prefer one over the other. You will want to check our departmental recommendations to see if your department is one of these. Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages to each system, but ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. We recommend using a computer that makes you feel comfortable.
Should I buy a laptop or a desktop?
Similarly to the PC vs. Mac question, this question comes down to personal preference. Students at ISU find great flexibility in the portability of a laptop- taking notes in class, meeting with groups in the library, or even writing a paper while eating lunch in the cafeteria. Some students, however, find that they prefer the powerhouse components available only in desktop computers. In the end, almost 95% of incoming students to ISU bring a laptop computer.
What specifications should I look for in a new computer?
Check out our minimum specifications. In the new computer column, you'll find our recommended specifications for buying a new computer. Any computer that meets or exceeds these specifications should work well.

Who is eligible for purchasing through TechZone?
All TechZone vendors are available to all friends and family of ISU community members, with the exception of Apple.
Apple discounts are available to:
- Students enrolled in a course of study leading to a degree or certificate from Illinois State University
- Entering students who have been accepted to Illinois State University and have responded by stating intent to enroll at Illinois State University
- Faculty members of Illinois State University
- Staff members who directly further Illinois State University's academic mission and who are not temporary employees, employed as a contractor, or acting as a consultant on behalf of Illinois State University.
Apple products purchased through TechZone must also:
- Be used for personal, educational, and/or research use.
- Not be purchased for the purpose of resale.
